Shawn and I were talking last night about what I could do with the children at the Psychiatric center, where next school year I'll be teaching writing and art. I wanted to do something to enhance their writing, and perhaps get their minds working. Shawn suggested that I have them write letters to the soldiers in Iraq, and also have them color the back of the envelopes all pretty. He said it made him feel really good to get letters, especially bright and colorful ones. So that's what I'm doing today. After I take Alysia to the doctor at 12:30, she and I are headed next door to the center.

Does that seem like a good idea? I mean the letters? We just need to get these kids doing something other than sitting around, and I have no idea what to do other than that. . . Let me know what you think!

That does sound like a good idea, I like it. Not only am I guessing it will help them, I'm sure the soldiers in Iraq would love to recieve them!

I'm hoping that they enjoy writing the letters, and that the soldiers do like them. Shawn also said that for the soldiers, if they aren't busy, they usually write back. Which would be great for the kids to have some one to look up to like that. These are all children whose parents just didn't want them, or also that were aggressive with family members or other people, and they need some kind of role model. And I'm thinking, just thinking that this might be what they need. . . if they get a reply, it would definitely give them a boost.

The kids had a great time writing letters and decorating the envelopes today. The longer we did it, the more I was getting excited. Just the thought that all the soldiers in Iraq who will be receiving these letters will hopefully be blessed. One of the little girls came up to me and said, "Mrs. Rae, thank you. Writing these letters makes me feel like I'm making a difference in some one else's life." I almost cried. I just hugged her. It is days like today that makes me love my job.

Simple~the idea about the letters is such an awesome one! I mean, it really can help those kids to have a sense of purpose. They will feel like they are contributing something very meaningful to the community. And the soldiers will appreciate it so much also! So how can anybody lose in a situation like that, huh? I can tell you love these kids so much~that is the greatest kind of teacher there is. And your writing is very beautiful. Keep on blogging big time!

I do love them. It tears me to pieces when everytime I see them. They have their good days, and they have their bad. Fortunately yesterday was a good day, lets hope that today, will also be a good day. Their last teacher quit because the one boy (13) pinned her against the wall, also in the past she received a lot of bruises from him. I'm afraid to take Alysia there, when that boy is in my class. But that's beside the fact, I love them like they are my own. And in a way, I consider them to be mine, just because I'm trying to instill these thoughts in their heads, that they are worth it, and people do love them. Thanks for stopping in to see my blogs, MadPoet!
